Some Ideas on Differentiation

Do you teach mixed ability or mixed level classes? If you teach in a situation where classes are very large, or where there is "rolling enrolment" with some learners coming into the class mid way through a course, the answer is almost definitely yes. In this case, you'll constantly face the problem that any single sequence of activities is inappropriate for one or more sections of the class. How do you cope with this?



The situation is common in ESOL classes. However, I would argue that wherever you are teaching, the problem of mixed ability or mixed level classes is common, and the solution that is proposed here may well be equally applicable for you.
